MEMORIAL ELEMENTARY
SCIENCE / ART EXPO
TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 2010
6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.
START THINKING OF SOME PROJECTS !!!!
We are so excited to start our kick-off of the Science/Art Expo with a visit from the University of Pittsburgh's Mobile Science Lab!!! If you haven't heard about it already, this 72 foot tractor trailer is a completely equipped science lab that Pitt so kindly and generously sends to schools throughout our area to give students an opportunity to learn about science. The lab will be staffed by BPSD's brightest high school students who so kindly agreed to donate their time to teaching our children some science! The Mobile Lab will be at Memorial on Wednesday, February 24, 2010.
On Tuesday and Thursday, February 23 and 25, a few of us will be going into the classrooms to talk to the students, give them some ideas for a science expo project and show them how great science can be. A great web site for ideas is www.stevespanglerscience.com. This site tells you what to do, why it works and has all the supplies you'll need.
If a student does not want to do a science project the other half of the Expo is Art. So feel free to encourage your child(ren) to be creative wherever their interests may be!
PLEASE NOTE: ALL OF THE STUDENTS WILL BE BRINGING HOME AN EXPERIMENT THAT CONSISTS OF A BALLOON AND A HEX NUT. TOGETHER, THEY CREATE A "SCREAMING BALLOON". THANKS TO THE LAWS OF INERTIA AND SOME CENTRIPETAL MOTION, THE HEX NUT, WHEN INSIDE AN INFLATED AND KNOTTED OFF BALLOON, AND WHEN SPUN, FLIPS UP ON ITS EDGE AND SPINS AROUND THE INSIDE OF THE BALLOON. THE UNIQUE SHAPE OF THE HEX NUT VIBRATES THE WALLS OF THE BALLOON TO PRODUCE A WONDERFULLY ANNOYING SOUND!!!
If you have any questions or comments, please get in touch with Donna Murphy, dmast41@yahoo.com, (412) 833-6222
